Working remotely while traveling on the road requires a reliable internet connection, and it’s a question we often get asked about at Henley’s Happy Trails. Recently, one of our readers asked about how we’ve managed to maintain remote work along the way, and in this post, I’ll share our experience with our mobile internet setup.

Our Mobile Internet Setup

We use a mobile hotspot set up from MobileMustHave that includes the Speed Demon 5G Mobile Internet Bundle with a Parsec Husky Pro 7, 7-in-1 5G Antenna.

This setup allows us to access fast and reliable internet on the road, even in rural areas with heavy tree coverage.

Our Services

  • P800 – 800GB/month Cellular Data Plan from T-Mobile (purchased through MobileMustHave)
  • Prepaid AT&T card as a backup if T-Mobile service isn’t good where we are
  • And Visible on our phones which provides unlimited hotspot data at 10mbps using Verizon towers

If T-Mobile or AT&T service isn’t available, we turn on the hotspot on one of our phones and connect the Peplink router from MobileMustHave to it. The Peplink router can pull internet from various sources, including a park’s WiFi. It then broadcasts that to its own private WiFi (WIFI-as-WAN functionality).

Checking Internet Connectivity Before Booking

Before booking a campsite, we use RV LIFE Campgrounds to check the internet connectivity available there. If we plan to boondock, we check the provider’s coverage maps, but they aren’t always 100% accurate, so sometimes boondocking can be interesting.

Why We Didn’t Choose Starlink as Our Mobile Internet Setup

At the time of our decision, the mobile version of Starlink was not yet available, which meant that it was not a viable option for our remote work needs while on the road. However, we are keeping a close eye on the development of Starlink’s mobile offering and may consider switching to it in the future.

Starlink offers many benefits, including high-speed internet access, low latency, and the ability to connect to the internet from virtually anywhere. Its network of satellites in low Earth orbit can provide internet connectivity to even the most remote locations, making it an attractive option for many RVers who need to stay connected for work or other purposes. The biggest drawback we’ve heard is that heavy tree coverage can make it difficult to find a clear shot of the sky.

Why MobileMustHave is My Go-To for Robust Internet Connectivity While RVing

I want to emphasize that I personally purchased the MobileMustHave system and have not received any free products to test. After nine years of full-time RVing and trying many different companies and solutions, I recommend MobileMustHave for any cellular solution for those needing a robust connectivity option and heavy data users. Their comprehensive packages, including antennas, modems, customer service, and high data plans, have been a reliable solution for my connectivity needs.

While there are other, even cheaper options for staying connected on the road, it’s essential to consider your circumstances and research various options to find the best fit. Our experience with MobileMustHave has been positive, and we hope that our setup can provide some insights for those looking to work and travel remotely.
