Free RV Camping at Bayard City Park in Nebraska

Capt. Benjamin Bonneville, 1832

Just like Chimney Rock National Historical Site, a geological land formation, served as a beacon to pioneers on the Oregon Trail and riders of the Pony Express, the free RV parking provided in the neighboring town of Bayard, Nebraska beaconed us to stay and visit a couple of nights.

We passed through western Nebraska late April/early May (2018) on our way north to South Dakota.  Like the bulk of our overnight stays, we learned about the free camping spot at Bayard City Park using Allstays.com.  A one year subscription of around $30 allows customers access to tens of thousands of overnight and extended stays all across the U.S.

AllStays has been a lifesaver for us on a number of occasions.  We can always find locations to stop at on our route if we are tired, seeking a full hook-up campground with ample amenities, low on cash and need a free or inexpensive site, or running empty on propane.  Levi created a mini tutorial that outlines the many features of AllStays and helps users locate campsites and resources along their journey.  He has since updated this tutorial with his AllStays 2018 Update video.

What does Bayard City Park offer RVers?

Three back in sites are situated at the southeast corner of Bayard City Park.  The ground,  gravel, was fairly level.  Based on the length of our rig, we figure RVs up to 35 feet in length can fit comfortably.  Each site comes equipped with electric and water hookups.  Take note, there is no dump station located here.

Pets are welcome but should remain on a leash, especially since the park is not gated and located within a neighborhood.  Having said that, we could count the number of cars that drove by on one hand throughout the day. It was very quiet.

The city park, located directly across the street from the three sites had a well manicured lawn. A few trees dotted the landscape.  The park included a pavilion with tables and electrical outlets.  A playground, enclosed tennis courts, swimming pool, and public restrooms were other features of the park.  Trash dumpsters were conveniently placed  just a hop, skip, and jump away from our rig.

Where is it located?

Is it worth a stop?

Yes!  Absolutely! Not only does the city allot RVers up to a 2 night stay free of charge, but they offer complementary electricity and water. After the two nights, campers must pay $10 a night.  A sign is posted with the information.

Bayard is a small town of about 1000 folks.  The park is just a few minutes away from a Dollar General, small grocery store, and diner.  We ate breakfast at the very inexpensive Corner Cafe and stocked up on a few toiletries at the Dollar General.  As far as cell service, we received excellent 4G service with Verizon.

We made a special trip to the Chimney Rock National Historical Site only five miles away where we learned about the history and preservation of the structure.  Take your camera and don’t forget to ask about the closer viewing area of the rock.  It’s a short drive down a dirt road and across the way from a cemetery with graves dating back to the late 1700s.  Chimney Rock is located on private property and the public is not allowed to walk up to the land form.
