Working at a Pumpkin Lot: Week 2

We successfully completed what the owner refers to as Hell Week.  It is so named because everyone is scrambling to get their lots set up as quickly as the pumpkins being delivered by the truckloads.  We were definitely feeling it by the end of the week…we did a lot of lifting and maneuvering with the pallet jack as we set up displays and arranged hundreds upon hundreds of pumpkins ranging from a pound to 25+ pounds.  Check out Episode 2 (Week 2)  of our adventures managing a pumpkin lot.  You can see our video and summary of Week 1 here.

Week 2: 9/24/18 to 9/30/18

Monday: Rest day.  Hay bales were scheduled to be delivered but it was raining pretty much all day.

Tuesday: The first delivery truck arrived with 17 boxes of bright orange jack-o-lanterns.  We laid out all 500+ pumpkins on pallets surrounding the big tent with the help of a couple of guys.  We were supplied with tablets to start running sales but only one customer showed up wanting to purchase corn stalks…bummer!

Wednesday: A second truck came rolling in with boxes upon boxes of all kinds of pumpkins!  It was amazing and overwhelming watching the skid steer drop off box after box of colorful gourds, miniatures, stacking, striped, you-name-it pumpkins.  A pallet of small hay bales and decorative corn were dropped off as well.  A few customers trickled in and the first purchase was a couple of hay bales.  One lady spent almost $300 to decorate her front porch.  These people are hardcore!

Thursday: Large bales of hay were delivered in the AM and we spent the rest of the day decorating  and pricing pumpkins in between the few customers that couldn’t wait to buy pumpkins or bales of hay.

Friday: Mums (short for Chrysanthemums) were delivered. We continued setting up displays and pricing pumpkins.

Saturday: Our mascot, Oscar, was delivered and set up.  Oscar is a 30 foot jack-o-lantern blow-up that sits front and center on our lot.  He’s lit up at night and the kids that came by that day made sure to let me know that when the big pumpkin is up, the pumpkin patch is open!  We had a fabulous turnout and sales were better than expected!

Sunday: We had another great turnout today!  More pumpkins were delivered…that means more pricing and arranging.  We are pretty sore with all of this week…but I do have to say that my biceps look pretty good!

Till next week….
