Free RV Camping at Waylon Jennings RV Park in Littlefield, Texas

There’s always one more way to do things and that’s your way, and you have a right to try it at least once.

Some of country’s original hits were sung by Waylon Jennings.  Part of the “country outlaw” movement, he was a musician without a cause…rowdy, rough and tumble with some legendary tunes to boot!  As a little girl. I was introduced to his music watching reruns of Dukes of Hazards.  It all started for Jennings in the small town of Littlefield, Texas where he was born and raised.  What remains of this small, sleepy town is an RV park and a tiny room in back of a liquor store, a shrine to his fame.

We passed through west Texas and the Waylon Jennings RV Park late April (2018) on our way north to South Dakota.  Like the bulk of our overnight stays, we learned about this free camping spot using Allstays.com.  A one year subscription of around $30 allows customers access to tens of thousands of overnight and extended stays all across the U.S.  For a one time fee of about $10, customers can access a sort of Express version of AllStays via app on their I-phones or Androids.

AllStays has been a lifesaver for us on a number of occasions.  We can always find locations to stop at on our route if we are tired, seeking a full hook-up campground with ample amenities, low on cash and need a free or inexpensive site, or running empty on propane.  Levi created a mini tutorial that outlines the many features of AllStays and helps users locate campsites and resources along their journey.  He has since updated this tutorial with his AllStays 2018 Update video.

What does Waylon Jennings RV Park offer?

Waylon Jennings is a modest park with two pull thru sites and eight back in sites.  Based on the length of our rig, we figure RVs up to 30 feet in length can fit comfortably in the back-in sites and double that in the pull-thrus.  Each site comes equipped with electric and water hookups.  Sites are sectioned off with posts.  Covered picnic tables and BBQ grills are located at some of the sites.  There is a dump station to the east side of the park and trash dumpsters are available for use.

The ground, a combination of dirt and some gravel, was fairly level.  Pets are welcome but should remain on a leash, especially since the park is not gated and located alongside a major city street.  There was some traffic noise throughout our stay and a few cars drove through the park, but it didn’t bother us.

Several horseshoe pits are just south of the RV Park, but we did not locate any horseshoes.  A few full hook-up, back-in sites are located just beyond this game area.  We suggest contacting City Hall if you are interested in these sites to see if the 4 night free stay applies to these, as well.  Signage in the park lists the phone number to call.

Where is it located?

Is it worth a stop?

Yes!  Absolutely! Not only does the city allot RVers up to a 4 night stay free of charge, but they offer complementary electricity, water, and a dump station. City parks that offer free night stays along with hookups are few, far and in between nowadays.  Having said that, we leave a little donation at each as a thank you.  This RV park had a few boxes for guests to leave donations.

Waylon Jennings RV Park is also just a few minutes away from restaurants and groceries.  We ate at Willy’s Grill and enjoyed delicious street tacos and wings, among other scrumptious Texas menu items.  We also made sure to make a pit stop at Waymore’s Liquor Store. The drive-thru has a small back room packed to the brim with all things Waylon Jennings.  It’s a pretty impressive collection of records, apparel, posters, trinkets, and awards.

Willy’s Grill is located at 425 Phelps Ave, and you can find the Waylon Jennings Museum at 901 Hall Ave.
